BEFFTA-Nominated Nigerian Author Chioma Nnani Returns Home

When I started writing, even when I published “Forever There For You”, I didn’t do it for the awards. I write because I am a writer. It’s really that simple, yet complicated at the same time.

I found out about my BEFFTA (Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts) nomination, on Facebook. I thought the person who told me, was having a laugh. It wasn’t just the enormity of the news that stunned me; I was literally trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to stave off an asthmatic attack when I was told.

Being nominated [for a BEFFTA] at this stage of my life and career, is incredible. In the past couple of years, I have had cause to feel like I’ve literally been to Hell and back, personally and professionally. So, my rather unexpected nomination feels like a “You’re not finished because the term ‘comeback chic’ was created for you; and your angels are working overtime!” statement.

There are some things that the public will never know. Taking control of my career, my life and my future, all cost me something major. But it would have cost me even more – it would have cost me, my life – for me not to think about myself first; then do right by me.

The Abuja-based storyteller, also says, “On another level, this means a lot, because of where I’m from. We (Nigeria) receive so much bad press, that it can get tempting to think that that’s all there is to us. For yours truly – a woman from a village that’s not on any map (yet) – to be one of the reasons that the world is compelled to recognise another aspect to the Nigerian story, is one of the greatest honours of my life.”
